Bullet Train Project Lahore To Rawalpindi

Introduction

Pakistan is set to enter a new era of transportation with the proposed bullet train project between Lahore and Rawalpindi, under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. This ambitious project aims to revolutionize the country’s outdated rail infrastructure, ushering in a modern and high-speed rail era for the province of Punjab.

1. The Announcement: A Vision for High-Speed Connectivity

On the direction of CM Maryam Nawaz, the Punjab government has formed a dedicated working group to develop a detailed feasibility report and project timeline for this revolutionary bullet train initiative. The maiden meeting, held between Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi and Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, marked the formal beginning of this landmark venture.

2. Formation of the Working Group

The working group includes:

  • Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan
  • Advisor to CM Shahid Tarar
  • Chairman and CEO of Pakistan Railways
  • Transport Secretary Imran Sikandar Baloch
  • P&D Secretary Asif Tufail

Their responsibility is to submit detailed recommendations within one week, focusing not only on the Lahore-Rawalpindi route but also identifying additional corridors for future bullet train expansion across Punjab.

3. Infrastructure Plans: Stations and Rail Tracks

As part of this mega project, the government also plans to upgrade Lahore and Rawalpindi railway stations to international standards. Railway authorities have briefed stakeholders on the current condition of existing tracks and what upgrades would be necessary to accommodate high-speed trains.

4. Project Cost and Funding Concerns

According to railway and transport experts, the estimated cost per kilometre of bullet train tracks is between $40 million to $50 million, pushing the total projected cost beyond $10 billion. While the scope is impressive, the financing of such a massive project remains a concern, with many questioning how the provincial government plans to secure the necessary funds.

5. Political and Public Support

The project has received strong backing from both provincial and national legislators. Members of the National Assembly, Senate, and Punjab Assembly have hailed the bullet train plan as a transformative step towards modernization. According to them, this project reflects Maryam Nawaz’s commitment to turning Punjab into a developed and efficient province.

6. Bullet Train Features and Expected Benefits

The proposed bullet train will:

  • Drastically reduce travel time between Lahore and Rawalpindi
  • Provide world-class transportation for commuters and tourists
  • Reduce reliance on road travel, cutting down on fuel consumption and carbon emissions
  • Boost economic activity and regional connectivity

7. Past Ambitions: The Murree Glass Train Example

This is not the first time Punjab has shown ambition in rail modernization. In 2024, the government announced a Murree Tourist Glass Train, a scenic train project planned to run from Rawalpindi to Murree through Margalla Hills and Barakahu. Although still in the feasibility phase, this initiative set the precedent for larger projects like the current bullet train.

8. Foundation Stone and Project Timeline

According to multiple PML-N leaders, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to lay the foundation stone soon, officially launching the project. If all goes according to the feasibility report, construction may begin by the end of 2025.

9. Public Reactions and Future Implications

Citizens and development experts are hopeful but cautious. While many praise the government for taking bold steps toward infrastructure improvement, they remain skeptical about:

  • Project financing
  • Timely implementation
  • Long-term maintenance

Still, optimism remains high due to the political will and leadership continuity within Punjab.

10. Final Thoughts: Can Pakistan Achieve a Bullet Train Dream?

The Lahore-Rawalpindi bullet train is more than a transport project—it’s a symbol of progress, modernization, and ambition. If executed successfully, it can serve as a blueprint for future intercity high-speed rail projects in Pakistan, connecting Karachi, Islamabad, Faisalabad, and more.

Conclusion

The Lahore-Rawalpindi bullet train initiative has the potential to transform Pakistan’s transport landscape. With solid political backing and an aggressive development timeline, Punjab may well become the first province in Pakistan to host a world-class high-speed rail system.

Whether this dream becomes a reality depends on feasibility, funding, and flawless execution. For now, all eyes are on Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and her administration as they steer the province into a new age of transportation.
